How does an airstream toilet work

A few of the smallest trailers offer Porta Potties. These toilets have two sections. The waste is collected in the bottom section and must be emptied manually.

Larger trailers offer the more typical RV toilet in an enclosed bathroom and offer considerably more privacy. Waste collects in a separate holding tank and is emptied from outside the travel trailer. Travel trailers are fitted with three separate water tanks. The freshwater tank holds the water that is taken onboard for use in the kitchen and bathroom.

The gray water tank holds water that drains from the kitchen and bathroom sinks. The black water tank holds the waste from the toilet. The size of these tanks varies with the size of the trailer. As an example, a foot-long trailer may have a fresh water tank that holds 48 gallons, and gray and black water tanks that each holds 32 gallons.

A foot-long travel trailer can carry more weight, so it may have a fresh water tank that holds 90 gallons. Gray and black water tanks usually average about 37 gallons each.

Rather than a handle on a tank like at home, a travel trailer toilet has a pedal located underneath the bowl. We had been so fed up with it that we almost replaced our composting toilet with a flush toilet.

For comfort, put extra neoprene underneath the toilet seat. Does the Weekender model mean it has less solids capacity? That was my main concern but this video here show a good comparison between the two and the compost bins are the same size. But still. There are even portable toilets out there that are basically like an all-in-one toilet complete with a built-in fresh and black water tank. A few of the highly rated brands include Camco , Thetford and SereneLife.

The top detaches from the bottom to empty the tank. There is a fresh water tank too that is used to flush down into the bottom tank — a battery is used for this feature. We use organic RV tank treatment to keep the tank clean in between dumping it! If you can afford the electricity and the cost of the toilet , burning your toilet business seems like the way to go! The waste empties through a small bin and it comes out as ash. It requires no water, no bags of material. Just a sheet of wax paper per use.

A couple of downsides I see right off the bat is the capacity and the cost per flush. Use as a full-time toilet would just be too expensive. No touching when emptying. Yep, you heard right.

You can make your own toilet. All of these fancy toilets mentioned are expensive, some being ten times as expensive as a standard black water toilet. There are several folks out there who have successfully crafted a composting toilet from scratch.

Into the gray tank 2. Into the black tank 3. Diverting beneath the trailer directly into a rain bin 4. Diverting beneath the trailer and onto the ground not legal everywhere.

The only real change here is where we keep the liquid waste. AStreaminLife even went one step further and combined their gray and black tanks together which allows them to stay out boondocking twice as long as before.
